Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills

One of the most important qualities for a patient care technician is good people skills.

Working in this field, you'll be in one of the most patient-facing roles in the healthcare industry. You'll be dealing with people all day long, including patients, their families, nurses, doctors, and other professionals. You must enjoy working with people since you will be working with patients and other medical professionals daily.

Problem-solving

Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills

As a patient care technician, you'll need to do more than care for your patients’ current needs; you'll need to anticipate their needs and plan for them. When a patient has a problem, you must figure out how to fix it quickly whether it's changing their bedding or flagging a nurse's attention for something more serious.

Communication

Interpersonal skills

Patience and compassion

You will need to communicate your patient's condition with doctors and nurses daily so they can receive adequate treatment.

Patience and compassion

Patience and compassion

Patience and compassion

Many of your patients will be frustrated, upset, or angry at their situation.  They may move or think slower due to an injury or illness.  You must exercise patience and respect at all times.

Physical stamina

Patience and compassion

Physical stamina

Another essential skill is helping patients handle the basic tasks of day-to-day life.

Since many technicians work in long-term care facilities, they'll be responsible for helping a patient eat, drink, bathe, dress, use the bathroom, and get around. You may have to lift patients out of beds and chairs throughout the day.  You'll need to be physically strong.
